Rim Light Effect in Your Portraits

What is rim light? Well, it is simply the light showing up behind your subject.

The light source can be the SUN or any form of artificial light - in a studio it will usually be a set of strobes set behind the subject.

How do you get that effect without over exposing everything? The answer is to meter your subject by taking an incident light reading with light meter. Alternatively, if you're not using a light meter, set your camera metering system to "spot metering" and focus on your subject.

You will need to experiment with your camera and it's setting under varying lighting conditions so that you can how it reacts.
