Wedding Photography Poses Really Do Matter - Here's Why!

Good poses for your wedding photography is so important. Whether or not you like posing for photographs, a picture must be aesthetically pleasing to succeed.

And - Yes, I know the trend these days is to capture moments using a photojournalistic or reportage style and NOT to pose.

I've photographed hundreds of weddings and every parent has always wanted a really good posed image of their daughter and new son in law.

So, I strongly believe there is a place in every album for some professionally posed images.

So what makes one picture sparkle and look good whilst another of the same couple doesn't?

Thinking about a couple, here's a few pointers:

wedding photography pose

Avoid standing side by side straight to the camera and

instead turn towards each other at a 45 degree angle so that there isn't a gap between you.

Position the Groom slightly behind the Bride whilst maintaining the 45 degree angle (this puts the Bride in the lead position - after all, Boys - it's their day!)

A tip for Brides is to put your weight on the back foot (Holly's right foot in this picture) so that you show off the front leg - hidden under the dress but it helps you to relax and pose naturally!

A tip for Grooms? If you want to shed a few pounds (pictorially, that is), pose as suggested and unbutton your jacket and allow it to hang naturally.

If there is a big height difference, look for props to equalize the height - perhaps, a couple of posing blocks to sit on.

Notice how the the Groom's mouth lines up with the Bride's eyes to make a good composition. This has been achieved by adjusting the height of the Groom's posing block.

A piece of self criticism here - Holly should have be positioned more towards her husband as described earlier.

Note for photographers: It's possible to get a great set of different images here as the couple are having some "me only" time away from everybody else.
