Photo Mats

A photo mat (sometimes known as an overlay)is simply the paper mount that masks a photograph from the frame.

Photo mats enhance images and protect them When you frame your picture, place it on a mount board followed by choice of mats. Once secure it can be put in it's frame behind the glass with backing to hold it in place.

The same principle applies to a page in a wedding album. A Mat will keep your wedding pictures safe from the elements and damage in your wedding album.

Why use a photographic mat?

1. Looks, they add a decorative element to the frame and help focus the viewer's eye squarely to the center of the image.

2. Moisture, the overlay provides a small pocket of air just above the surface of the photograph, which means moisture is less likely to develop inside of the frame. That moisture can damage the surface of the picture.

3. Wrinkles, a pre-cut mat also protects the surface of the image from wrinkles by holding the photograph securely in place.

The main types you can buy are:

Paper mat, Alpha cellulose and Cotton rag.

A pre-cut paper mat-board is by far the most budget-friendly option. They come in a large selection of colors which is helpful when you want to add a complementary or contrasting color to highlight your photograph.

Whilst paper overlays have advantages they can also cause damage over time because they are made from wood products that contain acid.

A big advantage that alpha cellulose and cotton rag have is that they're considered archival quality.

This means they're acid-free and are unlikely to cause damage to your precious wedding photos.

Bainbridge is one name to consider when buying these products.

Pricing Alpha celluose can be found at moderate prices, whilst a cotton rag mat is usually the most expensive.

This is because a cotton rag mat is thicker than other types and the core color is the same as the mat color, which makes for a better-quality finished inner edge.

In addition to framing, you can also purchase overlays (same as a mat) for your wedding album, whether it's a standard album or a scrapbook.

Much like a framing photo mat, you want to ensure that you buy the high-quality, acid-free versions for your wedding album to minimize damage to your images over time.

These are often advertised as "archival-quality" mats.

They come in a variety of shapes and regular sizes . Customized sizes can also be ordered and you are only limited to what your mind can imagine.

A simple Google search for "wedding-album-photo-mat" turns up a variety of options.

The most classic of wedding albums showcases one or two photos per page, simply matted with a neutral color, such as white, black, blue, grey or black, depending on the color of the album page and cover. This creates a traditional, timeless look.

Fixing them them to the page is easy - they come either ready gummed (tear off the strip) or plain. The professional way is to use a tape gun and two sided transfer tape. We use a 3M Scotch ATG700 adhesive applicator for 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch tape.

You can also order a mat in fun shapes such as hearts. Using these types are fun in the beginning, but keep in mind that your wedding album will last the life of your marriage, which will hopefully be an entire lifetime.

Whilst your wedding album should showcase your creativity and personality, a traditional look using a classic photographic mat will never go out of style.
